The art of finishing things

Starting is exciting. Finishing is where the work becomes real. A few ways to get past the messy middle.

Every project has a messy middle. The excitement of the start has worn off, the end is still out of sight, and every flaw suddenly looks enormous. This is where most things quietly get abandoned.

First, define “done” before you start. Not “perfect”, but a clear finish line: 1,000 words, three songs, one working prototype. When you know where the line is, it’s much easier to cross it.

A finished, imperfect thing teaches you more than a perfect idea ever will.

Second, lower the bar for this version. You can always make a second draft. You can’t improve something that doesn’t exist. Give yourself permission to finish something rough.

Finally, share it. Showing your work to even one person turns a private project into a real thing, and makes the next one easier to finish.
